Wind Index

The Wind Index (WI) aims to quantify the wind energy production fluctuations regarding the historical means. However, it is based upon real wind farm production results, properly corrected in order to dissipate any operational unavailability effects. More than to represent the produced wind resource variation on the produced energy, it is intended to describe regional patterns. It is also a very useful analysis tool for all the players in the wind energy market, therefore allowing them to properly evaluate their monthly results regarding the long term patterns of fluctuation.

The WI is annually revised, therefore, increasing the long term reference period and reevaluating the zones, subzones and the combination of the wind farms within every established region. The annual revisions have retroactive effects on the previous results, allowing the project to maintain the continuity and accuracy.

The Portuguese WI is published every trimester by MEGAJOULE, in partnership with APREN (Associação Portuguesa de Energias Renováveis), which supports all the associated operational costs of the project, and has the full cooperation of several associated developers who are so kind as to freely provide their monthly production data, and to whom we must express our gratitude.
